If you are one of those people that only wakes up to the sweet smell of your coffee maker brewing your first pot in the morning, you realize that mornings are probably just not your gig. If waking up is hard to do, then you probably need to add some healthy routines into your life to make morning more of a boost than a buzzkill.
If you are ready to ditch coffee and still wake up happy, there are some routines you can try out.
1. Don’t Do This at Night
There are a lot of distractions and ways you can mismanage your nightly routine to ensure you need a large pot of coffee in the morning to get going. At least hours before resting your head on your pillow, it is important to not consume caffeine, alcohol or sugary drinks. These items will ensure a difficult time falling asleep and staying asleep.
It is also important to give your brain a good break from your phone before dozing off. This means turning off social media, reality TV, messenger and anything else that distracts your brain. Instead, take a few minutes to meditate or just relax in an unplugged manner. These distractions can keep your brain spinning all night long causing your morning to be a snooze.
2. Brush Your Teeth
Even though you want to hit up that first cup of coffee in the morning, you should really be hitting up your toothbrush. When you sleep for 7-8 hours at night, your mouth becomes dry and dehydrated. This is ground zero for loads of bacteria. When you first wake in the morning, head for your toothbrush and pay extra close attention to your tongue. Brush it clean for a great feeling first thing in the morning.
3. Fuel Up
Even better than a cup of joe, a fuel-packed breakfast will get you moving faster in the a.m. A balanced meal of complex carbohydrates, protein and a little bit of healthy fat will get your body feeling ready for the day. Eating first thing in the morning also increases your serotonin levels. This leads to reduced anxiety.
4. Pump Iron
Exercising first thing in the morning is another great way to feel good through the rest of the day. It does not have to be just pumping heavy weights. Any type of physical activity like running, jogging, yoga or workout video can lead to a happier morning. Just remember that stretching prior to a heart pumping activity is also a great idea. Stretching even for just five minutes can help calm your mind, improve your posture and flexibility, improve your blood circulation and prevent your risk of injury.
5. Ditch the Buzzing
Is the sound of your alarm loud and buzzing in your ear? This could pose a big problem for your morning routine. Consider switching the annoying buzzing alarm sound to something for relaxing and soothing. It might take you an extra moment to rise and shine, but then your heart won’t be pounding and your head won’t be spinning.
Even consider waking up to music. Soft tunes can increase antibody levels that have the potential to improve immunity and reduce stress hormone levels.
6. Smell Something Beautiful
Your sense of smell should not be left out in your morning routine. The smell of mint and peppermint can elevate your mood, increase your attention span and alertness. Some people swear by essential oils and they could possibly make a difference for you and your morning routine.
7. Bring Calmness to Your Nightstand
What does your nightstand look like? If it is a cluttered mess without anything soothing, this could be an area that is needed to change. When you wake up in the morning and look to your nightstand, you want to see something soothing and calming. This could be a picture of your family, a beautiful trinket or something that brings about the sense of nostalgia.
8. Bring in the Sun
Waking up can be hard to do. A way to make it a little more easy is to let the sun into your room. Some bright, natural light can help your body come to. Even a little walk, first thing in the morning can help wake your body up as it can boost your serotonin levels.
It is absolutely possible to ditch the coffee first thing in the morning and still wake up in a good mood with energy to get your body going. You might have to tweak your morning routine and maybe try out a few new things. However, the results could be phenomenal.
